Having a teaching philosophy is an essential part in being a teacher and teaching students. It is the belief that a teacher has and these beliefs will greatly impact the way they teach their students. The research paper “Instilling a personal teaching philosophy in pre-service teachers: Vitally important but not always easy to achieve” written by “It encompasses what teachers believe and value about teaching, as well as how students learn best. This has great importance, because it is from this personal philosophy that pre-service teachers will base their decisions.” A philosophy is used by teachers in how they teach lessons, how they interact with students, it will affect how they see teaching in general and how they see themselves as a teacher and it will impact the way in which they run their classroom. This is one of the reasons I was greatly surprised after testing my own values on education. After taking that test I realized that my teaching philosophy fell along the lines of behaviorism. The definition of behaviralism as found on this slideshare is “Behaviorism as a Philosophy of Education Behaviorism is a branch of psychology that, when applied to a classroom setting, focuses on conditioning student behavior with various types of behavior reinforcements and consequences called operant conditioning. ... It has increasingly become part of the educational process.”
As a teacher I believe that teachers can influence students to have positive behavior in the classroom. Under the behaviorist theory students will be able to quickly observe which answers/ actions lead to positive feedback from a teacher and then use that to behave in a positive manner in the classroom. I believe that if teachers encourage students to act positively in the classroom and ignore negative behavior students will learn so much more. I also believe that a student’s behavior is influenced by the people around them. For example if a few people in the classroom start talking then soon the whole class will but at the same time if most of the students are being quiet and listening to the teacher then it is very rare that within a minute the whole class will be rowdy and rambunctious. I also believe that repetition is key in making sure a lesson is successful. The more you repeat something the more likely your students will remember it.
