Skype in the classroom expands its walls

There are many ways teachers can use Skype to teach economics in the classroom. For example, students can use Skype to talk with students less fortunate than them. Suppose students use Skype to talk to children less fortunate than them. In that case, students can learn about microeconomics which, as stated in the text, is how "the economy affects individuals and business." Students can also use skype to learn the difference between wants and needs when talking to someone from a country that unfortunately does not have a good economy. What might be a want or need for students in the U.S might not be a want or need from someone in Uganda. For example, students in the U.S. might want flavored water, but Someone in Uganda might want clean water which, is extremely hard to come by in  Uganda. People in Uganda do not have the money to filter their water and are often drinking water that is unhealthy or filled with parasites. Another example of how students can learn about wants or needs through Skype is through jobs. People in Uganda might want to have a specific position in computer science. But people in Uganda need any job because it is almost impossible to feed their families without one.

My video-cast on teaching economics
Here is the video I created for the teaching economics chapter  in the text Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary School: Communities, Connections and Citizenships written by Lawrence Lyman, Scott Waters, Harvey C. Foyle, and Allyson L. Lyman.  You will also see it on march 27 in my blog in which I go into further detail of why I created this video
