Before class started, my classmates and I had to go on a virtual easter egg hunt and complete the question and answer portion found on the liquidated syllabus. I found this activity to be really fun and engaging. It was able to get me into the social studies methods mindset. The easter egg hunt first started with a question regarding the pact and asking if we would like to change anything. The pact involved what was expected of us throughout the course and what we should expect from Dr. Smirnova. Since this was a course in which we were taught how to teach Social Studies to elementary school students, I believed that add something to the "what was expected of us" tab. I believed we should have put that "we would respect the students we are teaching as we would respect our co-teacher candidates." the next activity involved watching a video about netiquette. Before clicking on the video, I never heard of the term "netiquette" before, so I assumed it meant internet etiquette. It turns out I was not too far off. For the second task, we were required to focus on rule number nine. Rule number nine showed us how to properly use emojis to express our emotions. After we finished watching the video, we then had to explain what rule number nine was using the website Jam board. Wikipedia defines Jam board as "Jam board is an interactive whiteboard system developed by Google as part of Google Workspace, formerly known as G Suite." Here is the link to the definition, and Here is the link to our Jam Board page. I liked Jam Board. It was fun choosing different colored post-it notes, and it also had restrictions on what could fit on the post-it. This caused me to simplify my answer. I could not go as in-depth as I wanted to, which caused me to drastically re-think my answer. After completing the Jam board activity about netiquette, we were required to watch an interview view about one of the textbooks we will be reading this semester. The textbook is called Tell Me Who You Are, Sharing Our Stories of Race, Culture, & Identity. It is written by Winona Guo and Priya Vulchi, who are both Asian American. The interview was very interesting. The authors explained why they wanted to write this book and how they were perceived as naive, so people of many different ethnicities could open up to them. We were then asked to explain how this book relates to the social studies methods course, which I did by using my favorite chapter. My favorite chapter in this book was "Our words matter." It was my favorite chapter because it explained that, there are certain words you should never say in society. And the same could be said for teachers. There are certain words you should never say in front of your students. After completing the task about the interview, we had to create a bitmoji, which is an online digital avatar. This portion was, overall, my favorite section of the easter egg hunt. I got to play around with different facial expressions, hair colors, and much more before putting it on the welcome class slide in the google powerpoint. My classmates and I used this PowerPoint to introduce ourselves to the class since it is online and virtual. Once we created our bitmoji's, we were done with the easter egg hunt and had to fill out a questionnaire based on what we found.
I loved this activity. It was a way to ease into the semester and was a good ice breaker. This activity was a way to get students to read the syllabus to understand how Dr. Smirnova set up the course. There was a prize at the end, but I haven't found out what it is yet. Hopefully, I will soon!
